French Morbier (Comtoise) Clock
National Repair Center USA

For 300 years the French have been making mechanical clocks.   In the early days of the 18th century this was largely a cottage business so many of these finely crafted clocks do not have a maker's mark.

Others were more mass produced by makers like Japy Freres. Frédéric Japy (1749-1812) was a remarkable pioneer in the industrialization of clock manufacturing and a visionary inventor. Born in Beaucourt as the second of twelve children in a well-to-do family, he was introduced to craft activities early on, shaping his future in the watchmaking industry. His intelligence was recognized by his schoolmaster, who encouraged his father to further his education in Montbéliard. Japy's contributions to manufacturing not only revolutionized clock production but also laid the groundwork for future industrial advancements.
