In 1931, S Smith and Sons Ltd. established Smiths English Clocks Ltd. as the Clock and Watch division of S Smith & Sons Motor Accessories Ltd. in Cricklewood, England. The following year, in 1932, Smiths acquired a company known as English Clock and Watch Manufacturers Ltd. of Coventry. Subsequently, in 1934, Smiths made the acquisition of the Enfield Clock Company, which maintained its production operations in Edmonton until 1950.
Notably, the Smith's 8-day Calotte clock made its debut at the British Industries Fair in 1934. During the 1930s, Smiths unveiled a synchronous electric chiming clock. In 1944, a reorganization of the entire Smiths entity took place. The primary company's name was altered to S Smith & Sons England Ltd., encompassing four distinct divisions. By 1956, Smiths introduced clocks featuring the innovative German "floating balance" movement, a technology licensed to the company. Subsequently, in 1960, a smaller version of this movement, designed in-house by Smiths, was offered to other manufacturers due to its ease and precision in regulation.
